TAKE FIVE: APRIL 2021

Just like Dave Brubeck, we’re taking five each month to give you the scoop on five things we’re excited about.

April is here and there’s no April Fools shenanigans on our end. There’s so much to look forward to this month.

From partying with the Rookies and live jazz at the beach to electric powerhouse vocals and the return of a popular jazz-soul-rock outfit, plus a first-time live album release from an iconic vocalist and pianist.

April 6: The Rookies at the Jazzlab

The Rookies are bringing their weekly party to the Jazzlab. What started as a quiet set of background jazz for punters while they imbibed their cocktails quickly devolved into an uninhibited, drunken dance party reminiscent of a time almost forgotten. Don’t miss out on the fun. Book your tickets here.

April 10: The Bandwagon Live in St Kilda

Award-winning musician Fem Belling and tech director Casey Macrae are bringing music around Australia by the truckloads. The Bandwagon Live is their rolling pop-up music club, decked out for safe and adaptable live performances. This month, the Bandwagon will come to life at St Kilda’s beachfront, with NYC’s most sought-after bassist Yunior Terry and his Cuban jazz band The Cuban League. It’s free to attend, supported by Creative Victoria.

April 16: Norah Jones drops her first live album ‘Til We Meet Again

That’s right. Songs from her illustrious career catalog featured on the album include “Cold Cold Heart”, “Don’t Know Why”, “Those Sweet Words”, “Sunrise”, “I’ve Got To See You Again”, “After The Fall”, “Tragedy”, and her Grammy-nominated “I’ll Be Gone“, along with some new originals from 2020. Get ready for the drop, watch the official album trailer here.

April 24: Thando at the Paris Cat

Zimbabwean-born, Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Thando serves nothing but electric presence and powerhouse vocals, with an ability to tell a story that takes the audience on a journey of self-love and reflection with just her voice. She’ll be playing an intimate show at the Paris Cat with Cristian Barbieri on guitar. Get in quick, Thando’s shows are quick to sell out; buy your tickets here.

April 28: Dandecat return to The Colour Club

Returning to the scene with a new sound, jazz-meets-soul-meets-rock outfit Dandecat are taking on the stage at The Colour Club for one night only. The four-piece group have spent the last few months finessing and writing a new collection of songs ready to excite crowd once more. Catch their comeback on April 28, buy your tickets now.

Plus, last month we talked about Billie Holiday vs The United States, a biopic following the government’s targeting of Holiday after performing her hard-hitting ballad “Strange Fruit”. Andra Day has since been nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Cinema Nova kicks off screenings from April 16.
