TAKE FIVE

Northside Records

Henry Maas’ iconic collection of classic jazz LPs is coming back to Fitzroy.

Henry Maas opened the Black Cat Cafe in 1982 to give a home to the local jazz-loving community. Together with his friends Toni Edwards and Mario Maccarone (of Mario’s in Fitzroy fame), they travelled the world buying the best jazz they could find. They brought it all back to Fitzroy, and along with the band called Bachelors From Prague they kept Fitzroy knee deep in Jazz. In 1994, Henry started The Night Cat, a legendary local live jazz venue in Fitzroy that still serves our soul.

Northside Records have recently bought the collection from Henry, and he has given his blessing to return these records to the funky streets that he helped give groove.

1000+ classic jazz records go out on sale at Northside Records, coinciding with opening night of the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival – including 100s of Blue Note records from the 50’s and 60’s, rare Japanese pressings, and LPs from classic labels such as Prestige, Riverside, and Verve. The collection will be unveiled from 6:00PM- 8:00PM on Friday 18 October and remain instore until the end of MIJF on October 27th. Not online, just inside.

The records will be launched with the local legendary DJ Andrew Young playing selections from the Henry Maas Collection, alongside photos documenting the Fitzroy music scene of yore by Henry’s niece Debra Maas.
