Kira Kira

“Their sound may enter your body conventionally enough via the ears, but it rushes straight to the central nervous system, so you seem to feel it with every nerve-ending.” – Sydney Morning Herald

Seven years on from their “absolute triumph” (AusJazz) debut performance at the 2017 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, avant-garde quartet Kira Kira returns, performing new material from their long-awaited second album.

Created by “the Ellington of free jazz” Satoko Fujii and her long-time collaborators—masterful pianist and composer Alister Spence and boundary-pushing trumpeter Natsuki Tamura—Kira Kira is now joined by renowned Japanese drummer Tatsuya Yoshida.

In Japanese, Kira Kira means “to sparkle or twinkle brilliantly”, and this bold quartet’s music is true to its name—brimming with an infectious energy and remarkable inventiveness. After touring internationally to wide acclaim, Kira Kira is set to stun crowds with its Melbourne International Jazz Festival homecoming.
