Antonio Sánchez: Birdman Live

10th Anniversary Screening and Live Film Score

Melbourne Recital Centre

Modern jazz luminary Antonio Sánchez performs his game-changing solo drum score live alongside the Best Picture Oscar-winning Birdman.

Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of tour-de-force film Birdman’s Best Picture Oscar win, drummer and composer Antonio Sánchez performs his game-changing, improvised soundtrack live in Melbourne. This immersive experience is a rare opportunity to see four-time GRAMMY winner Sánchez’s jaw-dropping craft at work, as he scores the film right before your eyes.

Since moving to New York City in 1999, Sánchez has become one of the most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene. Alongside 21 years and nine albums as a revered collaborator of legendary guitarist Pat Metheny, he has also recorded and performed with other jazz greats such as Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker and Charlie Haden.

Birdman, which won four Oscars and features a star-studded cast (Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts), follows a washed-up actor desperately trying to revive his career. Sánchez’s propulsive and fervent drumming explodes off the screen, providing the film’s internal rhythm—and serving as a companion, counterweight, and commentary on the psychological turmoil of Michael Keaton’s character.

10 years on, we invite you to revisit the film in a completely new light, with Sánchez‘s GRAMMY-winning and Golden Globe-nominated score punctuating its key moments and filling the Melbourne Recital Centre with an undeniably electric energy.
