Welcome back for a huge year of jazz!
The MIJF team is back from a well-deserved break, and we’re deep into planning for the 2025 festival, which will run from 17—26 October 2025. Block out those ten days in your calendar now (and keep your eyes peeled for some artist announcements in the coming months)!
If you need a jazz fix in the meantime, our friends at ABC Jazz and PBS 106.7FM have broadcasted three incredible concerts from our 2024 festival. Read on to find out more!
To kick off the new year, we tuned into the first of MIJF media partner ABC Jazz‘s broadcasts featuring key concerts from our 2024 festival. Nicole Zuraitis’ stunning performance aired on Jazztrack Live on Saturday 25 January, and can be listened to on demand on the ABC website or app. Zuraitis blew the crowd at Malvern Town Hall away last October, showcasing her GRAMMY-winning vocals – and if you missed it, now’s your chance to listen to the concert in full.
Thanks to our partnership with PBS 106.7FM, two world premiere broadcasts from the 2024 festival are now available to listen to via their website. On Tuesday 26 November 2024, Mike Gurrieri broadcasted the deeply personal and moving commission Tooni, by MIJF and the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO’s) First Nations Artist Residency program leader, Bumpy. Tooni incorporates Bumpy’s learnings of language and reflects on her travels on Noongar Boodja, tracing the footsteps of her family and Elders. Joined by members of the AAO, Bumpy performed Tooni to a packed house at Arts Centre Melbourne on 18 October 2024. Listen back to Mystic Brew with Mike Gurrieri to hear this special performance.
On Saturday 30 November 2024, Andrew Young presented the world premiere of a new suite of works from composer/flutist Erica Tucceri, MIJF’s 2024 Take Note jazz leader. Listen back to Jazz on Saturday to hear this ambitious and triumphant commission, performed to a full house at Howler at last year’s festival.
