Relive William Barton & Nduduzo Makhathini’s extraordinary collaboration

We’re thrilled to announce that a very special live recording of William Barton & Nduduzo Makhathini’s remarkable MIJF 2023 collaboration will premiere this month, thanks to our friends at the ABC.

This truly genre-defying pairing between distinguished ARIA winner, composer, vocalist, didgeridoo player and Kalkadunga man, William Barton and internationally-acclaimed Blue Note pianist, composer, philosopher and healer, Nduduzo Makhathini (South Africa), was a singular experience for all who attended—and an absolute highlight of the 2023 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Barton and Makhathini unveiled an other-worldly musical encounter that crossed borders, expanded horizons, and created new musical languages—speaking through ritual to both artists’ mutual and profound connection to culture, identity and Country.

If you missed it, or wish to re-live the magic, the performance will be available to watch on ABC iview from Sunday 7 July, and you can listen to the premiere broadcast on ABC Jazz’s Jazztrack Live, Saturday 13 July, 4pm AEDT.

Recorded live at The Substation on Friday 27 October 2023, as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
