Five minutes...with Brenton Foster

Brenton Foster continues to establish himself as an important voice in the Australian original music scene. His new album, The Nature Of Light, spans the divide between jazz, cinematic and singer-songwriter aesthetics. It follows his 2016 release, Two Cities, nominated for Best Jazz Album at the 2016 The Age Music Victoria Awards. We caught up with Brenton ahead of his 6tet's MIJF performance.

Five minutes...with Tal Cohen

Originally hailing from Perth, pianist Tal Cohen has been making waves internationally since he moved to the US a few years ago. He has played with heavyweights such as Terence Blanchard, Robert Hurst, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Joe Lovano to name a few. We caught up with the 2015 Freedman Fellowship winner ahead of his Melbourne International Jazz Festival appearance.

Five minutes with...Dean from Barrow Boys Brewing

Barrow Boys Brewing was born from a love of beer and a desire to create something with a distinctly "Melbourne" flavour. Dean Romeo is one of the founders of this great brewery and is part of dynamic team with years of hospitality and brewing experience. We're delighted to have them as a Partner of the Festival as they represent so much of what Melbourne is about. We took 5 minutes to chat to Dean about Melbourne, music and the interesting story behind the Barrow Boys name.

Five minutes...with Ari Hoenig

World renowned drummer Ari Hoenig has played in esteemed groups such as the Kenny Werner Trio, Chris Potter Underground, Kurt Rosenwinkel Group, Joshua Redman Elastic Band and bands led by Wayne Krantz, Mike Stern, Richard Bona, Pat Martino and Dave Leibman.  He has also shared the stage with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Toots Theilmans, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny and Gerry Mulligan.

An integral part of the New York City jazz scene, we are delighted to have Ari's trio on the MIJF program again.

We caught up with Ari ahead of his 2017 appearance.

Cory Henry, Brooklyn NY native, is telling everybody he is on his way. He is a two-time Grammy Award-winning keyboardist with musical roots in gospel, jazz and soul. His instrument of choice is the Hammond B-3 organ. His solo wizardry and charismatic nature have garnered millions of views via YouTube and other social platforms, giving birth to a rabid fan base excited for what’s to come.

Cory comes out to Australia for the first time with his Funk Apostles for one show only in Melbourne. We caught up with the Chief Apostle to get to know him a little better.
