2016 PBS Young Elder of Jazz

For the fifth year running in 2016, PBS 106.7FM, in conjunction with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, has recognised a significant mid-career jazz musician with the PBS Young Elder of Jazz Award.

The PBS Young Elder of Jazz initiative provides $10,000 to commission a brand new work of contemporary composition to be presented at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

We are delighted to announce that pianist and composer Joseph (Joe) O’Connor has been selected as the recipient of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz Award for 2016.

During the 2016 Melbourne International Jazz Festival Joe will present the premiere performance of ‘Confrontations’, a work that explores and expands upon musical relationships between his regular trio and influential Melbourne trumpeter Scott Tinkler.

"I am honoured and excited to have been chosen as the recipient of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz commission. It will allow me to write a suite of six compositions called Confrontations, to be performed by legendary trumpeter Scott Tinkler and my trio, which features James McLean and Marty Holoubek , O’Connor said.

The commission will fund an intensive period of composition, practice and rehearsal under the mentorship of Scott. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the composition process and workshopping the new pieces early next year."

The PBS Young Elder of Jazz is supported through the generosity of Mark Newman.
